Every dog has its day

Image
It was one of those blustery monsoon days when the Mumbai rain has washed away the filth on the road and the leaves on trees look bright and green as if freshly painted. It had been raining persistently the whole week and the road in front of our building was flooded with water. It had rained a lot and the sewers were over flowing with the downpour. We had some friends visiting us and all of us had just finished our breakfast. The rain had let up for a while so it was relatively quiet. In this quiet, we heard the howling of a dog. Initially, we ignored it and were sitting around chatting when the howling became louder and did not stop. I called up the security guard and found that a dog was trapped in one of the drain pipes near the gate of our building, who was creating this ruckus. On further inquiry, we came to know that it was a small dog who got swept in the drain with the rain water rain who is now lost and scared. I immediately fired up my laptop to search for 'Dog R

Hachiko - A Dog's tale - A Movie Review

I love dogs and I am a sucker for all Dog Movies. I have never bawled my eyes out so much in a movie. This is was a real tear jerker and pulled at my heartstrings. I cried a few tears while reading 'Marley and me', but this movie is in a league of its own. It too is based on a real story.  *Spoilers Ahead* 'Hachiko' or Hachi (DVD Version) is a remake of a Japanese film 'Hachiko Monogatari'. The American version is a bit different from the original story. It is about a college professor who adopts an Akita (Japanese dog breed) puppy wandering on the platform of a railway station. That is a beginning of an unbreakable bond between the dog and his master which transcends beyond the death of the master.  Hachiko, during his owner's life, bade him goodbye each day at the front of the station and used to be there at the same place to greet him when the professor came home from work. This ritual continues till one day the professor passes away. He suffers

One Woman and her Dog

Hey Sweetypie, come here my babyyyy...I love you a lot. Hey pumpkin, come on...I know you are listening, give me a kiss...mwaah...mwah He opens one eyelid and gives me a look of disdain, which says 'O Lord.. She is calling me again, give me a break, I have a life too'. I raise my hand and this catches his attention. I have his favorite treat in my hand. He gets up and eats it from my hands. BTW, this is not a conversation between Hubs and me, if you are wondering... It is hard to raise a dog from a puppy. The first few months are similar to raising a baby (Ouch!!! stop, all you mothers....it hurt, you know). Well, not so much like a baby...there is no diaper changing and feeding involved but the 'feeding every 4 hours' and 'pooping after every meal' are similar. All the growing pains are just compressed when it comes to dogs. There are different breeds of dogs that were bred to perform different roles to aide humans, like 'Alsatians' were bred as guard d

DawG Days

Yesterday, while going for a quick visit to friends in neighboring town, I saw many people out walking their dogs. All walked/trotted peacefully with their human companions. I remember that all my walks with my canine companion were disastrous, just like tug of war with both of us vying to win the top post. Exceptions to this were the first few months when 'Buddy' was still a clumsy puppy. I had an upper hand then and could lead him where I wished to go with just a slight tug of my wrist. Within a few months, things dramatically changed and the balance of power tipped on his side. In spite of being a superior(That is what I was made to believe) being with two arms to perform any complex task, I was unable to be the ultimate victor in this war. His powerful neck was capable of dragging me in any-which direction as he wanted. Our walks used to start off fairly routine with me walking and talking calmly as a rational human being, belying the sudden dramatic change in events to h

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Daytime

As you can see from the title...yes its about my dog oops you can say ex-dog since he is been adopted by family friends last year when we moved here to Lancaster. For people who do not know about me, let me just give you a snapshot of my Dog 'Buddy' - a chocolate Labrador retriever. You can read more about him in my first ever post 'Missing Buddy. He is a very naughty and curious creature. I was recently having a conversation about Dogs with some friends and I remembered this funny incident worth blogging about. One day when I was back in good ole Pune -India, I was taking down the laundry from the line and one plastic clip fell on the floor. Any people who own dogs especially a Labrador will know that they eat anything and everything even you have just given them a meal . Buddy just jumped on it and started chewing it vigorously. I ran after him to take it out from his mouth and he thinking it was a game started running even faster around the whole house. By the time I c

Everyday on my way to work...I pass by a park....where I see people exercising their Dogs... I see dogs of all types...frolicking away and I suddenly start missing my Dog " Buddy ". He is a brown bundle of Energy....who loves to play fetch...Hide N seek and what not... I still remember the Day we had brought him Home in Ahmedabad...a curious little fur ball of 2.5 Months.... We fell in love with him.The first few months were tough as we never had a pet earlier.... He was with us for nearly 3 years....we had to give him up to a family friend as we moved to UK for a year.... He is doing great in his new home and has adjusted well....but heart in heart I want him to miss us as we miss him...this makes me wonder whether dogs think...or associate FOOD= LOVE... Buddy is a fantastic dog...albeit a thoroughly spoilt one...who loves food of any type...he can eat anything from Oranges....to Dry Dog food.... His intelligence reflects through his green eyes...and is always ready for a G
