All the dhinchak 'song and dance routine'

I was watching a clip from the 'Ellen Degeneres show' featuring Dev Patel and Freida Pinto, the new celebrities from 'Slumdog Millionaire'. You can see it here.

Ellen asked them about the songs and dances in all Bollywood movies and as usual everyone was like "ohhh yes Indian movies have songs and dances....and at a blink of an eye the characters in movies break out in a song". Ellen then said that they end each show with a bollywood song and the entire Cast and crew of the show break out into a Dance. That got me to thinking 'Then why complain about the songs and dances??

I have heard many people including famous Indian personalities talk about the songs and the dances as if they should not be there....ahh Bollywood movies are too long and have too many songs and dances, its so weird.

Well then why has 'Bollywood' music gained so much of popularity?....its there everywhere and we love our Movies with all the weird stories and songs and dances. Indian culture has so many overlapping of different religions and it has assimilated it very beautifully as per my view. Its popular no only in India but Pakistan, Afghanistan and many other countries.

I remember the functions I attended in Lancaster University, the Diwali get together, the Chinese New Year and the final Ball and each and every time the DJ started playing English numbers and their were hardly any dancers on the stage. The moment a Bollywood number started there were hoards of people dancing away...and thoroughly enjoying themselves even if they did not understand the language. Such is our Indian music...

I won't say that all songs are great or all that dancing is required in all the movies but, those are the crowd pullers...music breaks all barriers of language or culture and that's what makes Indians love it.

We have no need to pretend and agree if someone dislikes our music. If you love the music why hide behind a veil of duplicity....whats there to be ashamed of....we love life and it reflects through our movies...

  1. You are absolutely correct. however the so called "elites" pretend to dislike the music, it is in fact an integral part of Indian culture. In fact its a multi-billion industry and for that one has to give credit to the songs and dances.

Bollywood songs are Bollywood songs. (STOP).

    JAI HIND!!!!!

  3. So true!!There's a certain something in many Bollywood songs and dances, that's missing from, say heavy metal and the like! And,imagine the variety-from a cool 'Masakali'(From Delhi6, the latest rage) to 'Bachna Ae Haseenon',there's a song for every mood. So,if the 'elite' feel that they need to turn up(down?) their noses at Hindi songs,it's their loss.:)

  4. Don't worry...slowly Hollywood and then the world will get used to Bollywood style of film-making.

I agree that Bollywood movies and give up or change some of the aspects of film-making...but songs and dance is not one of them - definitely not!

I am ready to sign any petition for anything that fights against removal of dance and songs :)
