Snooze Button

Every morning, most of us lift our head up from the pillow, wipe the drool from our cheek, sneak out a hand from under the covers to shut the insistent chirping of the infernal machine, the morning alarm. The extra 10 minutes after pressing the Snooze button is like manna, it is the best sleep we have ever had till the alarm rudely points out again that you need to get up.

If you are like my hubs, you will not hear the alarm even if the volume of the chirping has reached deafening proportions. I have to poke him in the ribs to make him stop the racket. He will give me a look as if I have lost it and slowly reach out to shut the alarm. After the noise has stopped, hubs will turn and curl himself up and fall in deep slumber. As for me, I am left trying to lure back the wonderful dream which was rudely disrupted.

I lie in bed, tossing and turning to find a comfortable position so that I could resume my dream. But now, sleep has evaporated and my bladder gives me a signal that it is at a bursting stage and something needs to be done fast or there could be an accident. I don’t scare easily and ignore the warnings, I close my eyes and pretend to sleep. My bladder is not giving up without a fight and the persistent spasms make it inevitable that I have to bow down and run to the loo. What is with women and bladders? It is as if the older we grow our bladders shrink in size.

After this tussle, it is pointless to reclaim the lost sleep and I trundle off to make coffee and remove the cobwebs from my brain. As I am making coffee, the snooze button on hubs phone chirps again, by now my patience has been stretched thin and I go and rouse hubs. After the alarm has been finally shut off, hubby will ask me to wake him after thirty minutes. I say yes but inside I am seething and I feel like pulling back the covers and screaming ‘I never wanted to get up early in the first place, you set the alarm and now you get to sleep while I am up’. Life is surely unfair….

While growing up, during exam time, my older sister and I would decide to get up early in the morning to study. I would be wide awake and would end up waking her after every few minutes and she would be requesting ‘Just ten minutes more and I promise I will get up’.
I feel like a human snooze button and every time without fail I do my duty of waking people up. I envy people who can fall back to sleep so easily and quickly even after their sleep has been disrupted. I cannot do it even if I try so hard. My mind is filled up with thoughts the moment my eyes open and I start planning the day ahead, I am charged up and then I cannot fall back to sleep.

I am sure one of these days I am going to throw Hubs mobile out of the window in a fit of anger.

How many of you use the snooze button on your Mobile phone or Alarm Clock each morning?

I bet, most of you would be grinning and nodding your head in agreement.

  2. we have the same scenario at home but role reversal.. hubby cant go back to sleep after the first alarm and I keep begging for 10 more mins. As u said the sleep u get after the alarm goes off is the best ever:-)

  3. Who invented the alarms any way? The best way to get up is when the sun rays enter the bedroom. But alas, we have forgotten that luxury. Fortunately both I and hubby get up as soon as the alarm rings, our most difficult task is to wake the two kids up for their school.

  7. Am so used to snooze button on ma ph, i dont even hav to open my eyes to do it!!! ;-)

  8. 99.99% times I wake up 5 minutes before the alarm goes off, so snooze doesn't work in my case.

But I could totally relate to that human snooze effect, for I have been that to my siblings and many times to my hubby too ;)

    Wonderful post LP :)
    Loved that graph ;)

  10. You are so right about the morning snooze phenomenon and the aftermath. And also about me grinning and nodding along :)

Good one! The graph gives the humor a scientific touch. Is you-know-who reading this, or is he snoozing again?

  11. mu sauten, the bloody blackberry, is somehow preprogrammed to ring some 50 times through the night. And HE never gets up to turn it off, coz he can never hear it (how can he with all that snoring?) And needless to say, i'm up. And that bladder thing...darned true babe.

  13. Ah! Vins, those were the days huh? ;)
I still do the snooze button but 9 times out of 10, after I hit the snooze another human gets into the bed and kicks me in my ribs and back till I give up. Did you do some long distance brain washing of the impressionable minds as a revenge of the good old days? :D

  14. Dat graph was soooo true. Once deep slumber strikes der is no gng back.

M d Sleeping beauty at home, but i do wake up early thanks to last minute feeding of d baby b4 heading off 2 wrk n a struggle wid d hair iron 2 ensure d dreaded bad hair day doesnt take place.
Hubs is d insomniac here, but wid d football season, hes dead by mornings.

Unfortuantely, my 6month old has decided to take after his dad, and wake up at the slightest excuse.Grrr..not a gud quality for a bby. So d bby wakes up when d alarm rings and ofcos doesnt nyone 2 sleep once hes awake :)

  15. I have a Chihuahua, which is even worse than a snooze button. She awakens every morning promptly at 7:00 a.m. I can feel her breath and know without opening my eyes that she's staring at me. God forbid one of my eyelids should flutter and she pounces. On the other hand, one could do worse than awaken to Chihuahua kisses every morning.

  16. LOL..well,dreamland's a wonderful place,na,LP...getting up can be a drag,sometimes,for many..:)
    =---
Me?Well, when I'm asleep,I think I wouldn't wake up in a fire,even..the only thing that gets me awake is if there's a cockroach or something trying to see if my feet are edible-but then, thanks to pest control in Baroda, and cleanliness in Dxb, this factor is also gone.:)
    ----
As for waking up-I don't remember the alarm ringing,even..am up by 5 AM daily, even on a holiday like today...yes,sir,I mean,ma'm,I'm a morning person.:)But try and keep me awake after 930-10 PM and you have a tough job.:)So,I guess it's a matter of conditioning your body's timing, where sleep is concerned-practice makes perfect,as they say.

  17. I am wondering if all the husbands in this world are alike??

Mine does the same thing! The worst is he doesn't even wake up to put the damn thing on snooze, the alarm goes on, rings for the stipulated time and automatically goes into snooze!! Later when we argue about it he says, "the alarm tone is so soft that he doesn't even know when it starts" to which I say "you shud be asking me" :D

I too have a trouble sleeping back once I am up!! Aaj hi I woke up too early!!! Sigh!!!

    Loved this post :D

  19. LOL You are like daughter and my sister :) They can sleep forever and still go back for another snooze!! But I know the morning feeling, specially in winters!!!

Now nobody at my place needs to rush anywhere very early so I can wake up at 5 or 6 or 7 but getting up early means some extra time for blogging :) That's a huge incentive!

  20. Thankfully I have mastered the art of going back to sleep even after getting up for doorbells and other calls...

  21. I hate my Alarm Clock. I have thrown him away a few times but my Mom always brings him back. And Snooze, yes. I use that all the time. Though, it doesn't seem to be long.

    Hilarious post. Smiles...

  22. My phone has a maximum of 6 snoozes, which are really not enough for me :)

  23. Hubby seems to have swallowed an alarm clock as a child. If he has to start early, he will start waking up in advance, pee and go back to sleep. This happens at least three times and by that I would have lost all sleep.
As for me I am programmed for 6.15a.m not earlier.

  24. Ha ha!! Had me laughing!! :P
It's the same story everywhere!! :)

  25. Nice Post. Personally I don't use the alarm at all but keep the curtains covering the French Windows of my room open. My room faces east and as the sun rises, it wakes me up. An year ago it used to me my dog(R.I.P) who would lick me and pounce over me untill I was up.

  26. I am grinning an nodding my head in agreement :D!

I hate waking up early.. I am a night person and I can sleep as late as 7am if you ask me too :P. but waking up, its a pain in the a**.

I have classes in the morning at 7 since a month now for which I to keep 2 alarms including my phone with 5 minutes snooze activated on each. quite a waste actually, because my mom is the one who ultimately wakes me up..

P.S. i was thinking of a post on something similar.

  27. I was smiling reading this alright. Not because I ht the snooze button. I hate to be woken up by alarms or for that matter people. So uncannily enough I get up before either try to.
I smiled remembering I was the snooze button for the kids. But guess what, if a couple of calls and couple of requests of 5 minutes later they did not get up, I just did not bother to wake them after that, mean Mom that I am. :P ;) Lol, so they learnt to wake up at second call if not first!

  28. Same story... but somehow I never use the snooze button :-)

  30. The snooze button on my mobile is part of my routine. So much so, I keep my alarm for 6:10 in order to wake up at 6:30! On the friday that just went past, I hit the snooze button so many times, I woke up at 7 and was running late...

    ReplyDelete
  31. I do too! But like you, I hate being woken up by the husband's alarm. I also hate being totally awake while he simply turns around and resumes snoring. Gah!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I set alarm for 7:00 am and will get up at 11:00, so in the mean god only knows how many times I keep pressing snooze button.

Whereas my husband will get up immediately. He will keep cursing me till 11:00 am. haha this happens every week end.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I so agree with you!! Some people just fall asleep the moment they lie on their bed. I always wonder how!! Nice post, btw!
